Massive Data Center Proposed for Lakeland Remains Under Review

Project Swan could bring up to 600,000 square feet of data center space to West Lakeland, but questions remain about its future.

A proposed hyperscale data center development in Lakeland continues to generate discussion among residents, city officials, and local stakeholders.

Known as "Project Swan," the proposal would bring up to 600,000 square feet of data center space to approximately 60.5 acres near Old Tampa Highway and Wilkinson Road in west Lakeland. According to submitted plans, the project could include three data center buildings, supporting infrastructure, mechanical equipment yards, stormwater facilities, and an electrical substation.

Data centers have become increasingly important as demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, streaming services, and digital storage continues to grow. These facilities house large amounts of computer equipment and require significant electrical and cooling infrastructure to operate.

However, the Lakeland proposal has also raised questions from both residents and city staff. Community members have expressed concerns regarding power consumption, water usage, noise levels, traffic, and potential environmental impacts. Others have pointed to potential economic benefits, including construction activity and increased investment in the area.

The project recently reached an important milestone when the developer requested cancellation of a scheduled Development Review Team (DRT) meeting after receiving review comments from City of Lakeland staff. The applicant is currently evaluating those comments and determining how to proceed.

Importantly, the project has not been approved, denied, or withdrawn. City officials later clarified that the proposal remains active and under review, despite confusion that arose when it briefly appeared as withdrawn in an online tracking system.

As of June 2026, no final decisions have been made regarding the future of Project Swan. The next step rests with the applicant, who may choose to submit additional information, revise the proposal, or continue working through the city's review process.

For now, the property remains undeveloped land, but it could eventually become the site of one of the largest technology-related projects ever proposed in Lakeland.

We'll continue following the project and provide updates as new information becomes available.

A major development proposal is drawing attention in South Polk County. The City of Fort Meade has approved plans for what could become one of the largest tech-related projects in the region—a hyperscale data center campus. While projects like this are often framed as economic wins, the response locally has been more mixed.
