Originally built as the Polk County Courthouse in 1909, this free museum offers a fascinating look at the people, industries, and events that shaped Polk County.

If you've driven through downtown Bartow, you've probably noticed one of the city's most recognizable landmarks—the historic Polk County History Center. While many people know it as a museum today, the building originally served as the Polk County Courthouse and remains one of the county's most significant historic structures.

Construction on the courthouse began in 1908, and the building officially opened in 1909. Designed in the Neoclassical Revival style, its impressive columns, grand staircase, and elegant architecture have made it a centerpiece of downtown Bartow for well over a century. For nearly 80 years, it served as the center of county government, where court proceedings, public meetings, and important decisions affecting Polk County took place.

When a new courthouse opened in 1987, the historic building was preserved rather than demolished. Today, it operates as the Polk County History Center, allowing residents and visitors to experience the area's rich history while preserving one of Florida's most beautiful public buildings.

Inside, you'll find exhibits highlighting many of the industries and events that helped shape Polk County. Displays cover everything from the region's world-famous citrus industry and phosphate mining to railroads, tourism, military service, and the everyday lives of early settlers. One of the museum's most popular features is the restored historic courtroom, which offers visitors a chance to step back in time and imagine what the building looked like during its years as an active courthouse.

Whether you're a longtime Polk County resident or just visiting the area, the History Center is an excellent place to learn more about the community's past. The museum regularly hosts rotating exhibits, educational programs, and special events throughout the year, making every visit a little different.

One of the best parts? Admission is completely free, making it one of the best budget-friendly attractions in Polk County.

If you're looking for something unique to do in Bartow, the Polk County History Center is well worth the stop. Beyond the exhibits, the architecture alone makes it one of the county's most photogenic and historically significant landmarks.

Whether you're interested in local history, architecture, or simply exploring more of what Polk County has to offer, this is a destination that deserves a place on your list.

A proposed data center in Haines City is drawing attention after city officials said they do not currently have the water capacity to support the project. The proposed facility would be built near State Road 544 and Marion Road. According to city officials, the project could require approximately 150,000 gallons of water per day. Before the project could move forward, the city would need additional approvals related to its water supply. As of today, the project has not been approved. While this proposal is specific to Haines City, it reflects a much larger conversation taking place across Polk County.
