The Silver Moon Drive-In: A Piece of Old Florida Still Shining in Lakeland

Opened in 1948, Lakeland's historic drive-in movie theater continues to bring moviegoers together under the stars.

If you've driven down New Tampa Highway in Lakeland, you've probably noticed the giant movie screens standing above the trees. That's the Silver Moon Drive-In, one of the last remaining drive-in movie theaters in Florida and a local landmark with more than 75 years of history.

The Silver Moon first opened on April 14, 1948, becoming Lakeland's first drive-in theater. At a time when drive-ins were booming across America, families could pull up in their cars, grab snacks, and enjoy a movie without ever leaving their seats. While thousands of drive-ins once operated across the country, only a small number remain today, making places like the Silver Moon increasingly rare.

What makes the Silver Moon special is that it isn't just a historical attraction—it's still an active movie theater showing current releases on two outdoor screens. Visitors can enjoy double features, pick up classic concessions like popcorn and candy, and experience a style of entertainment that has largely disappeared from modern life.

I recently stopped by during the daytime to capture some footage of the property. Even without the crowds and movie screens lit up at night, it's easy to appreciate the nostalgia and history surrounding the theater. The large screens, vintage signage, and expansive parking area serve as reminders of an era when drive-ins were a centerpiece of American entertainment.

For residents of Lakeland and visitors exploring Central Florida, the Silver Moon offers something different from the typical night out. It's a chance to step back in time while still enjoying today's movies, all from the comfort of your own vehicle.

Whether you're a longtime local or new to the area, the Silver Moon Drive-In is worth adding to your list of places to visit. In a world that's constantly changing, it's refreshing to see a piece of old Florida continue to thrive.

A major development proposal is drawing attention in South Polk County. The City of Fort Meade has approved plans for what could become one of the largest tech-related projects in the region—a hyperscale data center campus. While projects like this are often framed as economic wins, the response locally has been more mixed.
