Fantasy of Flight's New Expansion Is Taking Shape in Polk County

A look at the massive new hangar under construction at one of Central Florida's most unique aviation attractions.

If you've driven through Polk County recently or follow local aviation news, you've probably heard about the latest addition coming to Fantasy of Flight.

I recently stopped by to film the progress, and one thing is immediately clear: this new hangar is massive.

Fantasy of Flight, located in Polk City, Florida, has long been one of the area's most recognizable attractions. Founded by aviation enthusiast and businessman Kermit Weeks, the museum is home to an impressive collection of vintage aircraft and aviation memorabilia. It has become a destination for both aviation enthusiasts and families looking for something unique to experience in Central Florida.

The newest addition to the property is a large hangar-style building located near the museum entrance. Construction has moved quickly over the past several months, with the steel arch roof structure now in place and exterior walls nearing completion. Visitors arriving at the museum can already see the scale of the project as they drive into the parking area.

While the building is still under construction, the expansion represents another investment in one of Polk County's most distinctive attractions. Fantasy of Flight has always combined history, engineering, and entertainment in a way few museums can, and this new facility appears poised to continue that tradition.

One of the things I enjoy most about creating local content is documenting projects like this while they're still evolving. It's easy to appreciate a finished building, but seeing the process unfold—and being able to look back later at how far it has come—is part of what makes these stories interesting.

If you haven't visited Fantasy of Flight before, it's worth adding to your list. The museum features beautifully restored aircraft, interactive exhibits, and a fascinating look at aviation history. And if you have visited before, this new expansion is another reason to keep an eye on what's happening in Polk County.

I'll definitely be returning once construction is complete to see the finished product and share an updated look at the new hangar.

A major development proposal is drawing attention in South Polk County. The City of Fort Meade has approved plans for what could become one of the largest tech-related projects in the region—a hyperscale data center campus. While projects like this are often framed as economic wins, the response locally has been more mixed.
